A Harare man raped and impregnated his teenage daughter before threatening to kill her, a magistrate has heard. The 45-year-old, who cannot be named to protect his daughter’s identity, appeared before Harare regional magistrate Fadzai Mthombeni for trial yesterday.

The man denied raping his 17-year-old daughter, whom he accused of lying. He said his daughter had fallen pregnant in Bulawayo where she worked as a maid. But the tearful girl maintained that her father was responsible.

Prosecutor Allan Goche told the court the rape took place in December last year when the girl was left in the care of her father. Her mother had visited their rural home in Mhondoro.

The court heard the two were staying in a single room but the teenager would normally sleep in the dining room together with the landlord’s children.

It is alleged on the fateful day, the man came back home in the evening and ate his supper before telling the girl he had a spirit which wanted to be cleansed traditionally.

He allegedly dragged the girl and placed her on his bed before raping her once without protection. According to state papers, he made four attempts to rape the girl again but failed.

At one time, he allegedly followed the girl to their rural home leaving his wife in Harare. The court heard while in Mhondoro he attempted to rape her again, but she bolted out of the house shouting for help.

Her grandmother asked her about the incident and she disclosed the rape, leading to the man’s arrest. It was then discovered the teenager was eight months pregnant. The teenager told the court her father had threatened to kill her if she disclosed the rape. The trial will continue on Wednesday.
